Apollo

Yard number S. 560 was completed by MEYER WERFT in 1970. Apollo was built for AB Slite as one of the so-called “Papenburg Sisters”, a series of nine almost structurally identical ro-ro ferries.

The car and passenger ferry initially operated between the Finnish town of Naantali, Mariehamn on the Åland Islands and Kapellskär in Sweden. Apollo, which boasted a 1A ice class rating, was sold and renamed on several occasions over the decades. At the end of its service life, the ferry changed its name back to “Apollo” and travelled back and forth between St. Barbe on the island of Newfoundland and Blanc-Sablon in Quebec, Canada. In 2020, it was sunk as an artificial reef in the Saint Lawrence River in Canada.
