Today saw the official ground-breaking ceremony for the new MEYER WERFT fire station. The building is being constructed directly on the green space next to the logistics centre. The new building will be operated by our long-standing and experienced partner in safety and fire protection issues – MEYER PORT 4.
What began in 1972/73 with a handcart and three dedicated employees as the first form of a works fire brigade has continued to develop over the decades to the present day: the investment in a new fire protection centre is both part of the current renovation programme and necessary to meet all official requirements for the shipyard. It is therefore crucial for the future of our company.
With the relocation of Rheiderlandstraße (K158), which will be completed in summer 2026, the building and the adjacent logistics centre will be located ‘within’ the shipyard premises and will later be bordered by the district road (motorway feeder road). The new fire station will be completed in autumn 2026 and will be operational for the MEYER WERFT plant fire brigade by early 2027 at the latest.
‘With the construction of the new fire station, we are jointly setting an example for a safe future. Fire protection is a fundamental component of success in shipbuilding,’ says CEO Bernd Eikens.
‘After several years of temporary solutions for our fire brigade, a new era is now beginning. We will now have all the modern solutions of the plant fire brigade and our fire brigade school provided in a centralised and well-organised manner to ensure safe and efficient shipyard operations,’ says Marcel Hermes, Managing Director of MEYER PORT4.
The full-time plant fire brigade is now on duty around the clock with around 50 firefighters, including five women. In addition, there is a part-time fire brigade with 36 positions, 18 of which are already filled, with another 18 still vacant. In addition, 20 shipyard employees support their colleagues in a similar way to a volunteer fire brigade. The factory fire brigade at MEYER WERFT not only has several fire engines at its disposal, but also a telescopic mast platform for firefighting or rescue from heights of up to 55 metres, as well as a multi-purpose boat.
