First Regional Day at MEYER WERFT

On 13 September 2008 some 600 representatives from 300 German and Dutch regional companies came to MEYER WERFT to attend the first "Regional Day". The motto of this event, which took place in the shipyard's covered building dock I, with one of the AIDA club ships under construction serving as backdrop, was to benefit even more from the potential of local and regional companies. For reasons of capacity the number of participants had to be limited to 600, but many more had shown their interest to take part. Bernard Meyer, Managing Partner of the Shipyard, and Ralf Sempf, Head of the Materials Management Dept., underlined the importance of having high-performance and top-qualified suppliers also in the vicinity of the shipyard to be able to implement the demanding shipbuilding projects. In this context Ralf Sempf also introduced the shipyard's newly developed supplier network, with MEYER WERFT serving as a hub, in which national and international suppliers to the yard may seek local assistance for getting their work at the shipyard done. Following the presentations held by the senior management, the participants had the opportunity to talk briefly to representatives from the yard's purchase and technical departments, and to join a guided tour of the production premises.

MEYER WERFT delivers Gunung Dempo

On 21 June 2008 MEYER WERFT in Papenburg delivered the 24th passenger ship for Indonesia to the Directorate General of Sea Transportation in Jakarta. Prior to the delivery, the 14,030-gt vessel was named Gunung Dempo by the godmother Mrs. Arita Jusman, the wife of Indonesia's Minster for Transportation. Compared to her predecessors, the Gunung Dempo looks a bit different. She represents an advanced type of ship out of a series of passenger ships for Indonesia, which cannot only accommodate 1,583 passengers, but is also designed to carry 98 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU). The Gunung Dempo is 146.50 m long and 23.40 m wide. Upon completion of this vessel, MEYER WERFT has built a total of 30 ships for Indonesia (24 passenger ships, 5 freighters/passenger ships and 1 gas tanker)since 1958. To date more than 97 million passengers in Indonesia have travelled on passenger ships built by MEYER WERFT. In close cooperation with P.T. Pal Shipyard in Surabaya, another three ships were built on their premises, having a capacity of 500 passengers. The first unit was completed in 1995, the other two followed by the end of 1999. These ships are operated as feeders for the vessels built in Papenburg. The cooperation between the island state of Indonesia and MEYER WERFT counts among the most successful projects in the history of German development politics. On 24 June the Gunung Dempo is scheduled to leave Emden for Indonesia. She is expected to arrive in the Indonesian capital Jakarta approx. three weeks later. Port of registry for the Gunung Dempo will be the Indonesian seaport Palembang. Gunung Dempo - Main Particulars

Start of Construction of Solar Boats

Handover of material to the attending teams

Papenburg, 19 June 2008 - Yesterday representatives of the teams participating in MEYER WERFT's solar boat contest received the first part of material needed for the construction. More than 60 students had accepted the shipyard's invitation and were given the remote control units for the solar boats. The project team headed by the training officer Dirks Kreutzmann disclosed more information to the students and teachers as to the next steps in the contest.

Over the next few days the teams will receive three modular solar units each, and a budget of € 700.00 will be provided to each team.

Of the 20 teams taking part, plenty come from all kinds of public schools in Emden, Papenburg, Leer or Dörpen.

This is the first time that MEYER WERFT and Celebrity Cruises organise the solar boat contest. This event is well received by students from regional schools as well as schools from all over Germany, which is reflected by the number of 60 registrations the shipyard received. The selected teams will put their model solar boats to the test in the shipyard's harbour basin on 7 September 2008.
