Papenburg, 09.12.2003 - Today the first outfitted of 17 blocks in total of the new 15,000-gt passenger ship for Indonesia Labobar was positioned in the building dock I at MEYER WERFT. The Ambassador of Indonesia in Berlin, Mr. Rahardjo Jamtomo, placed the traditional lucky penny on the blocks before the 600-ts crane lowered the block of the new ship. This block weighs abt. 360 tons, is 20 m long, 23.40 m wide and abt. 16 m high. The Labobar is newbuilding number 23 for the island state of Indonesia. The length overall will be 146.50 m, the beam 23.40 m. The ship will reach an operating speed of more than 22 knots and will be able to accommodate more than 3,000 passengers. The Labobar will be equipped with two main engines made by MaK with an output of 8,400 hp each so that the total propulsive power will be 22,850 hp. 32 containers can be taken on board in addition to the passengers. NCL has placed contracts for new luxury cruise liners

Delivery in 2005 and 2006

Papenburg, 22.09.2003 - The cruise operator Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), a subsidiary of Star Cruises (Malaysia), has signed two contracts with MEYER WERFT for new cruise liners. The contracts are supposed to be implemented by the end of September 2003. The approx. 93,000-gt ships are advanced repeat vessels of Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn which were delivered to NCL in 2001 and 2002. Delivery of the new ships will take place in mid 2005 and mid 2006. The two panmax newbuildings have a length overall of 294 metres and a moulded breadth of 32.2 metres. 2,669 passengers can be accommodated in 1,188 cabins. Over and above this, the vessels will feature many technical innovations, new interior designs and also new design aspects in the outer appearance. These new-generation vessels will perform a speed of 25 knots, and will be equipped with state-of-the-art azipod propulsion systems. The shipyard has invested plenty of work and enormous efforts in order to present the customer first-rate designs and conditions. "The contracts for the two newbuildings have a signalling effect both on the yard and on the market," as Bernard Meyer puts it. However, these new contracts do not avoid the planned personnel reduction at the shipyard; an adjustment of personnel capacity remains indispensable. Still the new orders will be a significant help for cutting back the underemployment of the remaining staff of roughly 2,000. Meanwhile Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (USA) has announced that it will not place contracts for vessels number five and six of the Radiance class. This has certainly caused regrets in Papenburg that the ships will presently not be built for Royal Caribbean. On the other hand, the way is paved now for the NCL ships and for other newbuilding projects. More Information : www.ncl.com Photos: www.ncl.com/hires/

Pont-Aven is floating up

New ferry is now in her element

Papenburg, 13.09.2003 - The RoRo-car and passenger ferry Pont-Aven (39.300 GT) for Brittany Ferries is in her element. Michel Maraval, Alexis Gourvennec and Henri-Jean Lebeau, managing directors of the French customer opened the valves of the dock gates by pressing the button and one hundred million litres of water were flowing into the building dock. The floating ferry was moved within the covered building dock I aftwards to be ready for the approaching engine trials and for final outfitting. This floating-up means a significant building phase before the ferry is finally leaving the covered building dock. Approximately one third of the prefabricated cabins which have been fabricated by Messrs. G+H PreCab in Papenburg have already been installed on the ship. Also the interior accommodation outfitting will be completed in the remaining time. On the ship, with a length of 182 metres and a breadth of 30.90 metres, 650 cabins in total are being installed. The Pont-Aven is able to carry 2200 passengers, 650 cars and 20 trucks. With a total engine capacity of 68,500 HP, the ship will reach a speed of 27 knots (approx. 50 km/h). This newbuilding which Brittany Ferries will start operating in the spring of 2004, will be the first European passenger and car ferry which offers a wealth of convenience and comfort as on a luxuury cruise vessel, such as an indoor glass covered swimming pool, cabins with balconies, cinema and trend setting restaurants and bistros. She will be operating between France - England - Ireland - Spain. Pont-Aven - Main Particulars

Delivery of Serenade of the Seas

Christening in N.Y. by Whoopi Goldberg

Papenburg, 31.07.2003 - The latest cruise vessel from the MEYER WERFT Shipyard of Papenburg, Germany - the 90,090 GT Serenade of the Seas - was delivered to Royal Caribbean International (RCI) on Wednesday 30 July 2003. Serenade of the Seas is the third luxury cruise vessel of the Radiance-class the Papenburg shipyard built for Royal Caribbean International. This newbuilding will further strengthen Royal Caribbean's leading position in the global cruise industry. The Radiance-class vessels are the most innovative and comfortable cruise ships worldwide. In addition to a very slim, yacht like design with extensive use of glass, the ship's interior offers a variety of special features and unprecedented comfort. More than 80% of the cabins are outside cabins. 90% of the outside cabins do have private balconies. The gas turbine plant, state-of-the-art stage technology and interactive communications systems provide comfort, entertainment and safety of the latest technical standards as well as an environmentally beneficial operation. The ship was designed in close cooperation with the owners and optimized using computer calculations and model tests. The slim lines of the vessel with its 15 decks as well as the novel propulsion drive and the innovative gas/steam turbine system provide excellent manoeuvring and sea-keeping characteristics resulting in extremely low sound and vibration levels. After delivery the Serenade of the Seas will sail from Amsterdam to Boston, USA on 4 August 2003. The christening ceremony will take place in New York on 22 August 2003. In the Fall she is sailing with destination Canada/New England. In November 2003 Serenade of the Seas repositions to San Juan, where she will start cruises in the Southern Caribbean. The fourth vessel of the Radiance-class-series, Jewel of the Seas, is still under construction at MEYER WERFT shipyard and will be delivered to RCI in spring of 2004.
