Meyer Werft continues on a European course

Last year, we reinforced Meyer Werft and Neptun Werft by injecting a considerable capital increase into both companies and transferring all assets, investment goods and real estate away from Meyer Neptun GmbH, Rostock. As a result, Meyer Neptun GmbH is now purely a holding company and both sites have been significantly strengthened. The shares in Meyer Neptun GmbH, Rostock were transferred to Meyer Neptun GmbH Luxemburg, which in turn belongs to Neptun Indus-trie in Rostock (NIR).

Papenburg has meanwhile become the largest shipbuilding location in Europe, while Neptun Werft in Warnemünde is the largest supplier of river cruise craft. We will now be opening an office in Luxemburg this autumn, which will control central purchasing for Papenburg, Rostock and Turku. The main aim is to emphasise our international ori-entation, to enable us to prevail in the murderously competitive world market. This is not a tax-saving measure; our taxes will continue to be paid in Papenburg, Rostock and Turku, just as before.

Another effect of this business development is that the group will continue to operate with no board of directors. The last successful negotiations, which resulted in seven new orders, showed clearly that a board of directors would have had an extremely ob-structive effect and perhaps even hindered the ultimate success of the negotiations. One of the great benefits of our companies is their ability to make decisions quickly and flexibly. This would not be possible with a board of directors. In our case, if such a board of directors were in place, the majorities would be very clearly on the company side, and such a body would therefore offer no advantage to the employee side, unlike the present-day codetermination model. Moreover, the step currently being taken does not in any way curtail the codetermination rights that apply today. Meyer Werft has enjoyed 220 years of success without a board of directors and will continue to do so in the future.

On 15 January, the site continuation agreement was signed between the State of Lower Saxony, Meyer Weft, the IGM and the shipyard works council. The state has committed itself to ensuring that ships are able to exit Papenburg and that Meyer Werft receives the innovation aids admitted in Europe. Meyer Werft undertakes to maintain its site at Papenburg in the future and thus to guarantee 3,100 jobs. The IGM and the works council undertake to assist in maintaining the competitiveness of the site of Papenburg.

In the last four days, Meyer Werft has received orders for four large cruise ships, and is now at full capacity utilisation until 2020. It is only by virtue of the many innovations in design and prototype development that the shipyard has been successful with its orders. An intensive effort is currently being made to reactivate the small, covered dry dock for 2020. Despite tough competition from China, Neptun Werft was able to win an order for an 18,000-cbm LNG tanker. The shipyard in Turku, too, was able to win two large cruiser vessels for the Carneval Group.

Today there are more than 3,300 people employed at Meyer Werft, which is 200 more than the contractually guaranteed number. As a training site, Meyer Werft continues to be a forerunner, providing a larger volume of training than that actually agreed to. The company has therefore more than met its obligations set out in the site continuation agreement and continues to stand fully behind the sites of Papenburg and Warnemünde.

Our main task is now to meet the challenge of ensuring the sites' worldwide competi-tiveness in the future. Many measures and projects have already been initiated with the aim of realising this. The IGM and the works council have committed themselves in the site continuation agreement to giving the senior management their full support.

Carnival Corporation Finalizes Contract with Meyer Werft to Build Four Next-Generation Cruise Ships

The four new cruise ships – part of a previously announced nine-ship strategic partnership for the world's largest cruise company – will be the largest ever built based on guest capacity

The vessels will feature a revolutionary “green cruising” design as the first-ever cruise ships powered at sea by Liquefied Natural Gas, the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel

MIAMI, June 15, 2015 — Carnival Corporation & plc, the world's largest travel and leisure company, today announced it has signed a multi-billion dollar contract to build four next-generation cruise ships with the largest guest capacity in the world. The contract with Meyer Werft is part of larger previously announced strategic memo of understanding with leading shipbuilders Meyer Werft and Fincantieri S.p.A for nine new ship orders between 2019 and 2022.

The four new ships will also feature a revolutionary “green cruising” design. The ships will be the first in the cruise industry to be powered at sea by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) -- the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel, representing a major environmental breakthrough.

The company said two of the ships will be manufactured for AIDA Cruises at Meyer Werft's shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Additional information about the ships, including which new ships will be added to each brand, will be made available at a later date.

Based on Carnival Corporation’s innovative new ship design, each of the four next-generation ships will have a total capacity of 6,600 guests, feature more than 5,000 lower berths, exceed 180,000 gross tons and incorporate an extensive number of guest-friendly features. A major part of the innovative design involves making much more efficient use of the ship's spaces, creating an enhanced onboard experience for guests.

Pioneering a new era in the use of sustainable fuels, the four new ships will be the first in the cruise industry to use LNG in dual-powered hybrid engines to power the ship both in port and on the open sea. LNG will be stored onboard and used to generate 100 percent power at sea – producing another industry-first innovation for Carnival Corporation and its brands. Using LNG to power the ships in port and at sea will eliminate emissions of soot particles and sulfur oxides.

In addition to the two ships being built in Germany, Meyer Werft – which had the capacity to accommodate these four ship-building orders in its production schedule -- will also build the two additional ships detailed in today’s announcement at its shipyard in Turku, Finland. Each new ship will be specifically designed and developed for the brand and the guests it will serve, underscoring the company's goal to consistently exceed guest expectations and provide first-time and repeat guests with the vacation experience of a lifetime on each and every cruise.

Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald said the contract is consistent with the company’s measured capacity growth strategy to replace ships with less efficient capacity with newer, larger and more fuel efficient vessels over time.

"We are looking forward to executing on the next step in our fleet enhancement plan," said Donald. "At a cost per berth in line with our existing order book, these new ships will enhance the return profile of our fleet. These are exceptionally efficient ships with incredible cabins and public spaces featuring a design inspired by Micky Arison and Michael Thamm and developed by our new build teams." Arison is chairman of the board of directors for Carnival Corporation & plc and Thamm is CEO of the Costa Group, which includes AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises.

Added Donald: “It will be exciting to see our shipbuilding team bring these new ships to life. Every step of the way, our focus is on designing state-of-the-art ships that provide a vacation experience our guests will love, and we are putting all of our creative energy and resources into making sure we achieve that goal.”

“These ships will expand our leadership position for the Costa Group, the market leader in all the major European markets,” said Thamm. “These will be spectacular ships designed specifically for our guests who sail on our Costa Group brands.”

Bernard Meyer, CEO of Meyer Werft, said: “In past years, we have built seven highly successful ships for AIDA Cruises. We are honored that Carnival Corporation has entrusted us with the implementation of this ambitious shipbuilding program, and we look forward to building these four magnificent ships.”

The new ship order will allow the Costa Group to continue to build on its leadership position in the European cruise market – a market in which five out of 10 cruise guests in 2014 sailed onboard a Costa Group ship. The Costa Group – along with Princess Cruise Lines, also part of the Carnival Corporation family -- also occupies the leading position in the rapidly growing cruise market in China.

As part of each shipbuilding company's long-term strategic partnership with Carnival Corporation, additional new ship orders are being explored over the coming decade.

First Education Evening at Meyer Werft

300 school pupils visit the shipyard to find out more about the training opportunities on offer

On 20 April, Meyer Werft held its first 'Education Evening' for school pupils. It was already clear from the number of registrations received that the level of interest would be high. Indeed, some 300 girls and boys from the 8th grade upwards took up the offer to visit the shipyard. Some were accompanied by their parents as they were informed about the twelve training opportunities provided by Meyer Werft and enjoyed their first taste of the exciting world of work in the shipyard.

Following a brief welcome from CEO Lambert Kruse and coordinating trainer Erwin Siemens, trainees and trainers gave detailed presentations of the various apprenticeship trades and dual study courses available in our training workshops.

Both trainees and trainers explained each individual profession at various stages during the tour. Afterwards, the pupils were given all the details they needed for applying for a training course at Meyer Werft.

Thanks to the great response and the large number of participants, Meyer Werft plans to repeat its Education Evening next year.

Meyer becomes 100% owner of Turku shipyard

The Meyer family, operating the shipbuilding company Meyer Werft in Germany, and the Finnish State acquired Turku shipyard from STX Europe in September 2014. Meyer Werft took up 70 percent of the shares, and the State of Finland purchased 30 percent of the share capital through the Finnish Industry Investment Ltd (FII).

As usual for the FII´s investment policy, it exits from its investments. In the case of the Turku shipyard, it was agreed that Meyer had a call option to buy FII’s minority stake in the shipyard.

Meyer has now decided to further invest in Turku shipyard using the call option.

“At the time of the purchase Meyer was only operating shipyards in Germany and therefore going to invest in Finland was a big and strategic step for us – which we carefully considered from different angles. Our well-coordinated acquisition with the Finnish Government made it possible for us to implement this strategic move, and I am sincerely grateful for the government for its valuable contribution. In general, I hope that our decision to buy all the shares is received as a sign of confidence that we can make Turku shipyard a long term shipbuilding success”, says Jan Meyer, Chief Executive Officer of Meyer Turku.

“We are happy to see that the Turku shipyard is developing so positively. Our engagement was an investment in Finnish strengths – the shipyard and the strong maritime cluster. It is good to see that Meyer is sharing our confidence and further invests in the Turku shipyard. This benefits not only the yard but also the maritime cluster and Finland at large”, says Jan Vapaavuori, the Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs.

“Meyer has had a great start in Finland bringing a lot of new orders to Turku. I want to congratulate Meyer and the whole shipyard for a fine start in Finland”, concludes Minister Vapaavuori.

The change in the ownership structure is expected to become effective within the next weeks.

Second Ship of New Class for Royal Caribbean

Today in Bremerhaven MEYER WERFT delivered the 168,600-gt cruise ship Anthem of the Seas to the US cruise operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (Miami).

The second ship of the Quantum class sets new standards in terms of eco-friendliness. It features highly energy-efficient systems, optimised hydrodynamics, heat recovery, an effective underwater paint coating, a state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment plant (hybrid scrubber) as well as energy-saving LED lighting systems.

Sophisticated alarm, safety and communication systems combined with the latest technology in propulsion and navigation are typical for Royal Caribbean cruise ships. The same high standard applies to entertainment and interiors.

The theatre is equipped with stage technology which has yet to find its peer ashore. Relax with a book at “Two 70°” and come back at night for a spectacular aerial show. The North Star on deck 17 allows the guests to travel in a glass gondola at a height of 90 m above sea level where they can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. On deck 17 aft the RipCord simulates parachuting at sea both for beginners or seasoned parachuters. Surf aficionados may want to look for the perfect wave high above water level on the FlowRider on deck 16.

As to interiors, the Anthem leaves nothing to be desired. 4,180 guests can be accommodated in 2,090 cabins, and are taken care of by a crew of approx. 1,550. On board of the Quantum-class ships the traditional main restaurant has been replaced by dynamic dining, where the guests rotate in five different restaurants which are included in the cruise rate, and which offer a wide culinary variety. All told, the guests can choose from 18 restaurants on board, among them Jamie’s Italian, the first restaurant at sea of the British chef Jamie Oliver. Plenty of shops, bars, lounges and spacious spa and wellness areas as well as spectacular open-deck areas and facilities offer endless pastime opportunities. “Seaplex” features the largest indoor activity area at sea that offers entertainment like bumper cars, roller skating, a competition-size basketball court as well as a circus school.

The “Two70°” stretches from deck 4 to 6, a spacious area offering a 270-degree panoramic view of the sea. The “Two270°” combines entertainment and technology which allows the guests to travel smoothly from day to night.

The Anthem of the Seas is another milestone by Royal Caribbean that will create a “wow” effect among its guests. The ship will depart from Bremerhaven to Southampton on 14 April 2015. Emma Wilby, travel agent, from Sunderland, U.K., is the Godmother for the world’s newest and most advanced cruise ship Anthem of the Seas.
