Disney Cruise Line Surprises D23 Fans with Announcement of Seventh Ship

Next Phase of Expansion Nearly Doubles Size of Fleet

Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announced plans today at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., to add a seventh ship to Disney Cruise Line’s award-winning fleet, giving families even more opportunities to create magical memories at sea and visit spectacular destinations around the globe.

Last year, the leader in family cruising announced plans to build two new ships at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany with scheduled completion dates of 2021 and 2023. The seventh ship will be built at the same shipyard and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

“We decided two ships wouldn’t be enough to hold all of the exciting new experiences we have been dreaming up to take family cruise vacations to a whole new level with immersive Disney storytelling, world-class family entertainment, and imaginative innovations that are fantastically fun and uniquely Disney,” Chapek said. “By the time all three new ships are sailing, we’ll have nearly doubled the size of our existing fleet.”

All ship names, design plans and itineraries are still in development, with each of the ships expected to have their own unique experiences. The three new ships will be powered by clean-burning liquefied natural gas and be the same size – approximately 135,000 gross tons with about 1,250 guest staterooms planned – which is slightly larger than the newest Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Since first setting sail in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has provided a quintessential family cruise vacation experience that combines the magic of Disney with the wonder of exploring different parts of the world. Guests step aboard majestic and beautiful ocean liners to enjoy legendary Disney entertainment, exquisite dining, spacious and well-appointed staterooms and magnificent public spaces.

With the launch of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy in 2011 and 2012, the company introduced several firsts for the industry, including a water coaster at sea (AquaDuck) and virtual portholes in interior staterooms (Magical Portholes) that provide real-time views of the sea as well as sightings of animated Disney characters. With a legacy of revolutionary design, Disney Cruise Line’s new ships will usher in the next generation of innovative cruise experiences designed especially for families that will transform the art-of-cruising and take guests on adventures in a way never dreamed of before.

At 167,725–gross-tons and accommodating 3,883 guests, Norwegian Joy is the second ship in the line’s Breakaway-Plus class and features an innovative design with amenities tailored to provide a “First Class at Sea” experience for Chinese guests with the elements of freedom and flexibility that Norwegian Cruise Line has become known for across the globe.

“As Norwegian Cruise Line continues our global growth, Norwegian Joy’s delivery marks a momentous occasion in our company’s history, signifying our official entry into the Chinese cruise market,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer for Norwegian Cruise Line. “We are very grateful for the outstanding team at MEYER WERFT, along with our operations teams and more than 1800 crew members, whom once again have delivered an exceptional vessel.”

“With this incredible ship, we have taken Norwegian’s signature on board experience and expanded and customized it with exciting features, services and amenities that combine the best of the East and the West,” said David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings China. “We are honored to deliver this spectacular ship to our Chinese guests and we can’t wait to see Norwegian Joy come to life when she welcomes her first guests upon her arrival in China this June.”

In advance of the delivery, David Herrera and executives from Norwegian’s offices in China gathered for a traditional blessing from the Chinese Goddess of the Sea, Mazu, to ask for safe and pleasant voyages for the ship and all its guests. The ceremony was at the Mazu Temple in Shanghai where, one year ago, the Norwegian team held a ceremony to obtain a blessing for the coins that were used in Norwegian Joy’s Keel laying ceremony, signifying the start of construction in April 2016. Following this recent visit, a ceramic statue of Mazu was gifted to the company by the temple representatives and brought to Germany for the occasion of the ship delivery. The statue has been given a place of honor aboard Norwegian Joy and will carry the blessings of Mazu on the journey to China

“With Norwegian Joy, we have completed a highly sophisticated ship with a lot of technologically challenging features. Thanks to a dedicated team consisting of Norwegian Cruise Line, yard, classification society and suppliers, we have accomplished our goal to deliver a great ship on time, while meeting high quality expectations,” said Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Werft.

Following her delivery, Norwegian Joy will begin her journey to China, where she will be showcased through a grand inaugural port tour featuring one-day events at the ports of Singapore, Qingdao, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, as well as VIP partner cruises from Norwegian Joy’s home-ports of Shanghai and Beijing (Tianjin). The ship will be christened in an exclusive star-studded event for honored guests on June 27, led by her Godfather, the ‘King of Chinese Pop’, Wang Leehom.

Norwegian Joy is Norwegian Cruise Line’s first purpose-built ship customized for the Chinese cruise market. The name Norwegian Joy emphasizes the experience that the ship will offer, a promise that guests will ‘Experience Paradise on the Sea.’ Accommodating 3,883 guests, Norwegian Joy is designed to provide First Class at Sea experiences with onboard amenities that cater to the unique vacation desires of Chinese guests. River Conveyance of Norwegian Joy

The new cruise ship for Norwegian Cruise Line (USA), the Norwegian Joy, will probably leave Papenburg on Sunday, 26 March 2017 to be conveyed on the river Ems to Eemshaven (Netherlands). The ship is planned to arrive in Eemshaven on Monday evening, before setting off on a short adjustment run on the Outer Ems. Later on the ship will go through several days of technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea.

The Ems barrier will be helping the Norwegian Joy to pass through the river Ems, a procedure which will be kept as short as possible. The following schedule has been drawn up for the conveyance of the new cruise ship, with changes possible at short notice due to the weather and tidal conditions:

Sunday, March 26, 2017
Approx. 08.30 pm: ship in waiting position (Papenburg)
Approx. 09.00 pm: ship passes sea lock (Papenburg)

Monday, March 27, 2017
Approx. 01.45 am: ship passes Friesenbrücke (Weener)
Approx. 04.00 am: ship passes the Jann Berghaus bridge (Leer)
Approx. 08.30 am: arrival at the river Ems barrier (Gandersum)
Approx. 12.30 am: ship passes the Ems barrier

!! All details are subject to the wind, weather and water levels and are therefore without guarantee. Timings can be changed at short notice!!

Once again, a team of river pilots from Emden will be responsible for bringing the ship through this manoeuvre. The pilots on the river Ems also looked after the MEYER WERFT ships during their passage to the North Sea in previous years. The whole team trained the manoeuvre at the computerised simulator in Wageningen (Netherlands) to be better prepared for the task.

The Norwegian Joy will proceed in reverse up the river Ems to the North Sea. This approach has proven successful in the past as it makes it easier to manoeuvre the ship. Two tugs will be providing assistance in the process.

The cruise liner with 168,750 GRT is one of the largest cruise ships to be built in Germany with capacity for about 4,200 passengers. After completing the technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea, the ship will be handed over to the owners on April 27 before setting off for Asia, where it will be serving the growing cruise market in China.

Meanwhile, MEYER WERFT continues to work flat out on other ships: building dock II currently houses the World Dream which is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2017 for the Asian Dream Cruises shipping company (Hong Kong).
