MEYER WERFT emerges as LNG pioneer

Jobs created for specialists – three cruise ships built per year

MEYER WERFT can look back on a year of highs and lows. The AIDAnova the biggest passenger ship ever built in Germany was built as the world’s first ever LNG-powered cruise ship. We’ve managed to continue obtaining a large amount of orders that will keep us busy until the end of 2023. Our shipyards are now serving almost all major cruise lines in the world with lots of demanding and innovative large-scale projects.

MEYER WERFT has set new standards in the industry this year, especially in the field of environmental technology. Despite a short delay in delivery, the AIDAnova was a global pioneering achievement for the shipyard: LNG was introduced to the market as an environmentally friendly fuel of the future for cruise ships. MEYER WERFT has established itself as a leading producer of cruise ships, obtaining orders for twelve more LNG-powered vessels. Intensive research is being carried out to develop fuel cell technology and other technical innovations for passenger ships.

In 2018, MEYER WERFT in Papenburg delivered the cruise ships “Norwegian Bliss” (Norwegian Cruise Line) and “AIDAnova” (AIDACruises). The hearts of these vessels, the floating engine room modules, were built by NEPTUN WERFT in Rostock-Warnemünde. MEYER WERFT will be delivering three cruise ships a year from 2019, creating additional staffing needs at the shipyard.

Design and Production of MEYER WERFT was marked by innovations as well: A new PLM/CAD-System was established and further improvements in eco-friendly surface treatment were realized.

“Our extensive changes and investments are preparing us for the future”, explains Managing Director Tim Meyer. “We’re looking for additional industrial specialists and IT experts. The dedication of our staff and partners are absolutely essential for us to face the challenges of the future”, adds Meyer.

AIDAnova handed over to AIDA Cruises

New era for the cruise industry: delivery of the world’s first LNG cruise ship

Today in Bremerhaven, MEYER WERFT from Papenburg handed over the world’s first LNG (liquid natural gas) cruise ship to AIDA Cruises (Rostock). The largest cruise ship ever built in Germany will be setting new standards in terms of environmental compatibility with its innovative LNG technology. The emissions produced by the ship will be cut drastically by using the clean fuel LNG.

Before the ship was handed over, AIDANova had proven its seaworthiness during three sea trials on the North Sea when many technical and nautical systems were successfully put to the test. The engine room unit with the modern power station supplying energy for all the ship and hotel operations was made at NEPTUN WERFT in Warnemünde. The four very low-emission dual fuel engines came from Caterpillar (Kiel/Rostock) and can run 100% on LNG both at sea and in port.

AIDAnova is the first of three new ships for the AIDA brand. The other ships with a rating of over 183,000 GRT and capacity for more than 2,500 cabins each will be reinforcing the AIDA fleet at the end of 2021 and 2023. Six other ships for Carnival Corporation (Miami) for other brands of the group have already been ordered in Papenburg and with MEYER TURKU.

Technical equipment and organization systems for the very best in entertainment concepts are standard for cruise ships from Papenburg. Besides numerous entertainment possibilities, many other technical systems on board the ship help to protect the environment, illustrated clearly by features such as the electric pod drive, improved hydrodynamics, heat recovery or extensive water cleaning systems.

New ground was broken in building AIDAnova with many technical innovations. The shipyard received support and assistance in the form of innovation grants from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the state of Lower Saxony.

Certification of the occupational health and safety and environmental management systems

Three MEYER companies - ND Coatings, the MEYER WERFT Pipe Machining Center and the MEYER WERFT Laser Center - have been audited for successfully introducing an occupational health and safety management pursuant to OHSAS 18000 (British Standard, Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series). ND Coatings were also audited for setting up an environmental management system pursuant to DIN EN ISO 14001. Today the companies received their certificates from the audit company DQS.

OHSAS 18001 is a globally acknowledged standard that forms the basis for occupational health and safety management in companies. The focus is on protecting people, and on occupational health and safety. It enables staff to take necessary measures before an accident happens or an illness occurs. A corresponding occupational health and safety management system has been set up in the companies over the last twelve months.

At the same time, ND Coatings has also introduced an environmental management system pursuant to DIN EN ISO 14001. Special attention was paid here to defining and assessing the environmental aspects and impacts resulting from the company’s activities, products and services, with a particular focus on the use of coating materials. The audits revealed that ND Coatings is progressing in the right direction by using coating methods with higher coating quality, reduced consumption of coating materials and less overspray, as well as using coating materials with far lower solvent levels. This was confirmed by successful certification.

Keel laying ceremony for the Norwegian Encore

Work begins on building the fourth ship in the Breakaway-Plus class for Norwegian Cruise Line

Keel laying for yet another ship in the Breakaway Plus class for Norwegian Cruise Line. Shareholders and directors of the American shipping company were joined by representatives of MEYER WERFT for the keel laying ceremony. During the ceremony, block 3 of the 169,145 GT ship was lowered into position in the shipyard’s covered building dock II. The block is 19.8 meters long, 40.4 meters wide and weighs 558 tons.

Andy Stuart, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, placed the traditional lucky cent under the block before the 800 ton crane lifted the structure weighing 350 tons into position in the building dock. “It’s great that we can celebrate the keel laying ceremony for the Norwegian Encore today with our partner MEYER WERFT”, says Andy Stuart. “The start of production is an important milestone, and we can rest assured in the shipyard’s expertise to build yet another first-class ship with the Norwegian Encore.” The ship will be finished in just 11 months before heading out to the North Sea for its sea trials. The Norwegian Encore is the fourth ship in the Breakaway-Plus class and will be completed by MEYER WERFT for Norwegian Cruise Line in autumn 2019.

“Today we have placed again a new of about 90 blocks in the building dock,” says Stephan Schmees, Executive Board Member Project Management of MEYER WERFT. “It is with great pride that we perform the keel laying ceremony today to symbolize the start of production for the ship. In autumn 2019, this will be the twelfth ship to be handed over to our long-standing customer Norwegian Cruise Line.” The order books are full at MEYER WERFT right through to 2023. The shipyard is constantly on the look-out for skilled qualified workers.

The cruise liner measures 333.46 meters in length and 41.4 meters in width, offering capacity for 4,200 passengers. The new-build will combine all the advantages of the Norwegian Breakaway-Plus class and has an additional deck to offer the passengers many added features and attractions.
