Start of Construction of New Luxury Liner

Keel of Super Star Libra for Star Cruises laid

Papenburg, 23 June 2000 - The first of approximately 60 blocks of the new 91,000 GT cruise vessel for Star Cruises, Super Star Libra, was today lifted into place in the covered building dock of the MEYER WERFT Shipyard of Papenburg/Germany. Colin Veitch, member of the board, laid the traditional "lucky penny" before the block was lowered down onto the keel blocks by the yard´s 600-ton crane. This first block weighs nearly 500 tons, is 20 meters long, 32.2 meters wide and about 8 meters high. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the cruise line, the shipyard, travel agencies, the classification society and the press. Super Star Libra is the first of two new luxury cruise liners for Star Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). With the takeover of NCL Star Cruises has become the third-largest cruise line in the world. Each vessel will have a length overall of 294 meters, develop a speed of about 25 knots and will be capable of carrying 2256 passengers in 1128 cabins. The new vessels will feature a completely new design. Among other special architectural features Super Star Libra will be furnished with two 175 m² large suites with private garden each. But the ships will set new technical standards, too: For example they will be fitted with podded drive of 360 degrees efficiency comparable to an outboard motor. The propellers will be directly driven by electric motors installed in a pod under the ship´s hull. Like other cruise ships before and like all other ships in the future the Super Star Libra will be coated with an environmentally friendly, TBT-free antifouling paint. The first vessel is scheduled to be delivered at the end of 2001, the second vessel is due for delivery in late 2002.

First Block of New Luxury Liner Laid

Radiance of the Seas to be fitted with gas and steam turbines

Papenburg, 17.09.1999 - Papenburg, 17 September 1999 The first of approximately 60 blocks of the new cruise vessel Radiance of the Seas for Royal Caribbean International (RCI) was lifted into position in the covered building dock of the MEYER WERFT Shipyard in Papenburg/Germany. In the presence of the yard´s managing owner Bernard Meyer and director Jochen Zerrahn RCI´s site office manager Captain Kent Ringborn laid the "lucky penny" before the first block of the new ship was lowered down onto the keel blocks by the yard´s 600-ton crane. The block had a weight of almost 600 tons, a length of 20 metres, a breadth of 32.2 metres and an approximate height of 8 metres. The Radiance of the Seas is the first of two luxury liners to be built for the new customer RCI. The vessel will have a length overall of 293 metres, develop a speed of more than 24 knots and will be capable of carrying 2500 passengers in 1051 cabins. The new vessels for RCI - the world´s second-largest cruise line - will feature a completely new design with an increased number of outside cabins compared to the remaining fleet. The ships will set new technical standards, too: They will be fitted with two podded drives of 360° efficiency comparable to an outboard motor. The propellers will be directly driven by electric motors installed in a pod under the ship´s hull. Furthermore the vessels feature a technical innovation: Two environmentally friendly gas turbines and one steam turbine will supply the vessel with energy for the propulsion and hotel operation. Due to the special combustion process the nitrogen oxide content of the exhaust gases from the gas-oil operated turbines is very low. Furthermore the exhaust gases from the gas turbines generate steam in the exhaust gas boilers which is then transformed into energy by the steam turbine. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled to take place early in 2001, the second vessel is due for delivery in the second half of 2002.
