"MethaShip" - new fuel with potential

The MethaShip research project investigated whether methanol can be used as a fuel for passenger ships. The results have now been presented by the project consortium, consisting of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Lloyd’s Register, MEYER WERFT and the associated partners Caterpillar, Helm AG and MAN Diesel & Turbo.

Papenburg/Hamburg, 29 May 2018 – Yesterday the MethaShip project consortium presented its results in Hamburg. The research project had been conducted under the auspices of the Research and Development Department at the MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, Germany. The project leader is Daniel Sahnen. The direct partners are the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft and Lloyd’s Register.

MethaShip is a national research project funded by the BMWi (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy ). It has brought together several partners from the fields of shipbuilding, classification, engine manufacturing and methanol production to investigate the potential of methanol as a fuel for cruise ships and RoRo passenger ferries. The project began in September 2014 and lasted 45 months.

The whole shipping sector is facing major challenges with ever stricter emission regulations for ships, paired with a growing environmental awareness in ship owners and passengers alike. The fuels and technologies used on ships must be capable of reducing emissions such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxide and sulphur. Furthermore, in the long term the fuel will have to come from renewable sources in order to meet the climate protection targets. This is the challenge tackled by the partners in the MethaShip project. The final meeting in Hamburg was attended by about 90 representatives and experts from politics, the maritime industry, associations and research institutions.

One central result of the project is that synthetic methanol in particular is a fuel with a future which offers the potential for implementing an ambitious maritime climate protection strategy. A few technical and financial details still need to be clarified until methanol can be used continuously in shipping. However, in the medium term a breakthrough could be possible with methanol as a fuel for all ships if success is achieved in implementing statutory framework conditions for the holistic evaluation of CO2 emissions.

Methanol
Methanol (also known as methyl alcohol) is the simplest representative in the category of alcohols. It is therefore a short-chain hydrocarbon. It is a clear, water-soluble, biodegradable fluid. In contrast to other alternative fuels, methanol offers the crucial advantage of being very easy to handle, because it is fluid at room temperature, compared to LNG with its storage temperature of -162°C. The associated better storage and transport properties are the main reason for the growing interest in using methanol as a fuel for shipping.

Delivery of Norwegian Bliss

New ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet for Alaska and the Caribbean

Today MEYER WERFT handed over the 167,800 GRT cruise ship Norwegian Bliss to Norwegian Cruise Line (Miami, USA) in Bremerhaven following extensive testing of all machinery and systems, sea trials and intensive crew training both at sea and in the Dutch port of Eemshaven. Norwegian Bliss is the 11th ship built for Norwegian Cruise Line by the Papenburg based shipyard.

Norwegian Bliss offers ultra-modern gastronomy and many exciting attractions including a large go-cart track. Pool highlights include two slides extending down several decks and double ocean loops protruding beyond the side of the ship. The luxurious interior, latest technical equipment and outstanding service with a crew of about 1,700 persons, promise a first-class recreation and relaxation experience.

The technical equipment for a perfect entertainment on board is standard for cruise ships built in Papenburg. But the ship offers more than just unique entertainment. Many technical measures to protect the environment ensure passengers can enjoy a lovely holiday while at the same time showing responsibility for the environment, illustrated clearly by features including the electric pod propulsion drive and improved hydrodynamics, together with many energy saving systems such as heat recovery or extensive water cleaning systems. The exhaust gas from energy-efficient engines is cleaned in a special scrubber system.

“This is our 11th cruise ship we delivered to Norwegian within the last 15 years. Our team made a great job. I am proud and thankful for their contribution”, said Tim Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Werft.

Following delivery on 19 April, Norwegian Bliss will be leaving Bremerhaven for Southampton, where the ship will be presented to the public for the first time. The ship will be christened on 30 May 2018 in her homeport Seattle by Elvis Duran, an American radio presenter. In summer time it’s sailing to Alaska and touring the Caribbean during the winter months.

River Conveyance of Norwegian Bliss

The new cruise ship for Norwegian Cruise Line (USA), the Norwegian Bliss, will probably leave Papenburg on Tuesday, 13 March 2018 to be conveyed on the river Ems to Eemshaven (Netherlands). The ship is planned to arrive in Eemshaven on Thursday morning. Later on the ship will go through several days of technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea.

The Ems barrier will be helping the Norwegian Bliss to pass through the river Ems, a procedure which will be kept as short as possible. The following schedule has been drawn up for the conveyance of the new cruise ship, with changes possible at short notice due to the weather and tidal conditions:

Tuesday, March 13, 2018
Approx. 07.30 pm: ship in waiting position (Papenburg)
Approx. 08.00 pm: ship passes sea lock (Papenburg)

Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Approx. 02.00 am: ship passes Friesenbrücke (Weener)
Approx. 04.15 am: ship passes the Jann Berghaus bridge (Leer)
Approx. 08.00 am: arrival at the river Ems barrier (Gandersum)
Approx. 10.15 am: ship passes the Ems barrier
Approx. 11.45 am: ship passes Emden

!! All details are subject to the wind, weather and water levels and are therefore without guarantee. Timings can be changed at short notice!!

Once again, a team of river pilots from Emden will be responsible for manoeuvring the ship to Eemshaven. The pilots on the river Ems also looked after the MEYER WERFT ships during their passage to the North Sea in previous years. The whole team trained the conveyance at the computerised simulator in Wageningen (Netherlands) to be better prepared for the task.

The Norwegian Bliss will proceed in reverse up the river Ems to the North Sea. This approach has proven successful in the past as it makes it easier to manoeuvre the ship. Two tugs will be providing assistance in the process.

The cruise ship with 167,800 GRT is one of the largest cruise ships to be built in Ger-many with capacity for about 3,998 passengers. After completing the technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea, the ship will be handed over to the owners on April 19.

Meanwhile, MEYER WERFT continues to work flat out on other ships: building dock II currently houses the AIDAnova which is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2018 for AIDA Cruises (Rostock/Germany).

Construction work under way for “Spirit of Discovery”

The new ship in the Saga Cruises fleet is starting to take shape. The first sections and blocks are now being constructed at Meyer Werft’s Building Dock I

Construction work has begun in Papenburg on the first new ship for the British shipping company, Saga Cruises. Today, Meyer Werft started its steel-cutting process for the “Spirit of Discovery”, the first ship to be delivered in summer 2019.

Lance Batchelor (CEO of Saga Group) and Tim Meyer (Managing Director of Meyer Werft) pressed the start button on the computer-operated cutting machine that will process the first sheets of steel for the new ship. This marked the start of the ship’s production. This project will “reactivate” Meyer Werft’s Building Dock I, which is not currently being used to manufacture new ships. It also means three cruise ships will now be delivered to various customers in 2019 and 2020, as opposed to the two ships that were originally planned.

The “Spirit of Discovery” is the first of two ships for the successful English cruise line. The ships each have an overall length of 236 metres, a width of 31.2 metres and a tonnage measurement of 58,250 GT. 999 passengers can be accommodated. Another new ship will follow in summer 2020.

The new ships will be tailored to the English market with a completely new design to make them stand out in every port, and their interior design and technology will set new standards.

Another new ship for AIDA Cruises

Another new ship for AIDA Cruises

The third ship of a new generation will be delivered in 2023. The ship will have a tonnage measurement of over 180,000 and is 100% LNG-powered.

The German cruise line, AIDA Cruises, has commissioned MEYER WERFT to construct a further ship. The cruise line has signed a contract with the shipyard for the construction of a third cruise ship. All three of AIDA’s ships will be powered 100% by LNG, an eco-friendly fuel. AIDA’s first ship will be completed in autumn 2018, with the second and third following in 2021 and 2023.

“This contract means we’re already building our tenth ship for AIDA in Papenburg, highlighting the long-term partnership between the Carnival Corporation and MEYER WERFT. The three ships in the Helios range will be fitted with state-of-the-art technology to make them sustainable and energy-efficient”, explains Tim Meyer, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT.

The new ship will have a tonnage measurement of over 180,000 GT and around 2,700 cabins. It’s one of the first ever cruise ships to be powered 100% by LNG within the “Green Cruising” initiative, making it particularly environmentally friendly.

The engine room modules for all three ships will be supplied by Rostock shipyard, NEPTUN WERFT. These modules will contain the entire engine room for each ship, LNG tanks and all machinery systems and installations.

MEYER WERFT has now received orders for the construction of 14 ships to be delivered by 2023. Such a long-term outlook means the shipyard must have the capacity to constantly adapt and evolve. About 50 to 80 million euro per year are invested in the facilities in Papenburg. To date the shipyard is recruiting specialists in different area as IT and other departments.
