Serenity - a ship for the target group of over-80s

The concept SERENITY was developed in response to the growing demographic of vibrant, health-conscious individuals aged 80 and beyond seeking life fulfiling adventures. This innovative approach ensures a vessel with tailored features that are unique to their needs, promoting an active and fulfiling lifestyle on the seas. Serenity would match and go beyond existing Senior Care to offer services for people who live in Independent living homes with some additional features from Assisted living homes.

The starting point for this ship concept is the demographic change focussing on America and Europe. In the year 2100, the over-80s in the USA will comprise the same number of people as the over-65s today. From this, our concept development group derived a completely new target group, which they called ‘80+’, and analysed what needs and requirements this target group would have.

The Serenity concept ship would meet these requirements without being a care home. The ship would offer services for people who live independently and autonomously in flats and utilise the services and benefits of assisted living facilities as required.

The cruise ship also satisfies additional requirements of the target group, for example with short walking distances on board and adapted corridor widths that enable social interaction and facilitate passenger flow and orientation on board in general.

This makes the Serenity a place at sea for dynamic and active people aged 80 and over, for whom travelling is part of life in old age.

A visible feature of the concept ship are the four sails that can be retracted as required. Together with fuel cells, batteries, solar energy and a focus on low speed itineraries, the ship can be operated in a climate-neutral manner.
