Research vessel METEOR IV floated out and conveyed to Berne

Papenburg, 22.04.2025 –

The construction of the new German research vessel METEOR IV, commissioned by the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has reached another milestone: with the undocking and the transfer from MEYER WERFT to Fassmer in Berne, the intensive final outfitting of the ship has now begun.

The design process and the shipbuilding work have been completed in Rostock and Papenburg. The MEYER WERFT Group is building the research vessel together with the Fassmer shipyard in Lower Saxony on behalf of the BMBF.

"Construction of the ship began at our shipyards in Rostock and Papenburg just a few months after the launch. Together with Fassmer, we have an experienced and powerful team working on this pioneering research vessel," says MEYER WERFT project manager Henning Stellermann.

Fassmer is contributing its many years of expertise in special shipbuilding - particularly in the construction of government and research vessels - as well as its established cooperation with ministries to the project. MEYER WERFT, in turn, is contributing its experience from the construction of the research vessel Sonne.

The new METEOR IV has a length of around 125 meters and a tonnage of approx. 10,000 GT. In addition to 35 scientists, there is room on board for 36 nautical and technical crew members. The METEOR IV is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research operations, primarily in the Atlantic.

The research vessel METEOR IV will replace the existing METEOR and the POSEIDON, which has already been decommissioned
