The Celebrity Equinox is the second ship out of a series of five cruise ships MEYER WERFT is building for Celebrity Cruises. Just like her sister ship, the Celebrity Solstice, the Equinox is equipped with particular environmental-friendly systems: In addition to the photovoltaic system and a special underwater hull coating, she is equipped with optimized hydrodynamics and a highly efficient lighting system.
The new cruise ship has a length overall of 317 meters, a breadth of 36.80 m, and can operate at a speed of 24 knots. More than 2,852 passengers can be accommodated on board. Upon completion of ample tests the Celebrity Equinox was floated out of the shipyard's building dock II on June 6th 2009. She was transported to the Dutch sea trials port in Eemshaven on June 20th 2009.
The ship was delivered to Celebrity Cruises in Eemshaven on July 16th and set sail for Southampton on July 17th 2009, with the first passengers already on board. The festive naming ceremony took place in Southampton on July 29th 2009.
