The best of theory and practice

Our work and study courses combine the best aspects of academic studies and vocational training to ensure a successful mix of theory and practice. After a maximum of four and a half years, dual students at MEYER WERFT are the proud holders of both a bachelor’s degree and a certificate of proficiency in their respective training occupation.

We currently offer work and study courses in cooperation with four universities of applied sciences in the north of Germany. The requirement to undertake dual studies is a general university entrance certificate (Abitur) or an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences. Once you have submitted your application with evidence of your school leaving certificate, the selection process will begin. If you are selected, a learning agreement will be concluded with MEYER WERFT and you will be enrolled at the respective university.

Courses of Study

Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

On the one hand, this course of study will teach you about shipbuilding (i.e. the project planning, design and construction of ships, parts and equipment), but it also deals with marine technology, such as rigs, offshore facilities and deep-sea research equipment.

In the basic section of the course, which lasts from the 1st to 4th semester, students attend lectures in both general and specialised areas. In the specialised section of the course, from the 5th to 7th semester, students develop their basic knowledge in a focus area of their choice. The 5th semester consists of a practical placement at the shipyard. Students write their bachelor’s dissertation in the 7th semester.

Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineers are specialists in fields where technology meets business. They have the ability to extensively analyse and solve any problems that arise in the development of products and the management of processes. For example, they launch and coordinate projects involving both engineers and business management specialists.

The basics are covered in the first four semesters. From the 5th semester onwards, students can also choose subjects to specialise in specific areas of production, product and project management, technical controlling or distribution management.

Mechanical Engineering and Design

A degree in mechanical engineering and design will teach you both the basics and specifics of mechanical engineering. During the course, students can choose to focus on mechanical engineering, such as plant engineering, production technology and construction, or on product development and design.

The study programme comprises an engineering design, a practical semester, various projects and a final paper over the course of seven semesters.

Electronics Engineering

A degree in electronics engineering covers all the steps involved in the development of electrical systems used in IT. Students learn about individual components – up to analogue and digital circuit technologies – as well as system programming and general aspects of systems engineering. They can choose to specialise in the areas of automation and information technology, technical computer science or marketing and sales.

The basics are taught up to the 3rd semester, and additional topics in the field of electronics engineering are covered in the 4th semester. Students can further develop their degree of specialisation from the 5th semester onwards, until the course of study is completed with a bachelor’s dissertation in the 7th semester.

Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, Cyber-Physical Systems

During a degree in mechanical engineering and computer science, you’ll learn about the professional application of technical computer systems and develop an understanding of their potential use, operation and adaptation.

After four years, you’ll obtain a certificate of technical proficiency and a Bachelor of Engineering.

Dual students in the field of mechanical engineering and computer science only spend half a month at the shipyard at the beginning of their studies and start their degree programme on 1 March.

Business Informatics

A degree in business informatics covers the basics of business management, mathematics and computer science. Traditional methods of teaching are complemented by case studies, laboratory exercises, assignments and a software development project in the fourth semester.

The necessary basics are covered as core modules in the first four semesters. From the 5th semester onwards, students can also choose subjects to specialise in specific areas of business informatics and business management.
